Messed up notifications

I had not realised that adding an Apple Watch completely takes over or in my opinion messes up the notifications on your iPhone. It seems if you try to stop this you lose a lot of health data from your watch.

I just want the watch to act an an additional notification not a replacement for what would be normal on the phone. I am constantly missing texts at the moment

This is one where I think Apple have got it completely wrong.

Am I missing something or is there a way to fix this properly. Chat got thinks not.
