**6 Months & 10,000 km with the Skoda Kylaq Signature AT – A Great Driver’s Car That Made Me Re-evaluate What I Actually Want From a Car**

**TL;DR**

I bought the Kylaq because I wanted a safe, fun-to-drive car with good highway manners and enough ground clearance for road trips. Six months and 10,000 km later, I still think it’s probably one of the best driver’s cars in its segment.

But here’s what surprised me: the car didn’t change—**my priorities did.**

I realised that I spend far more time driving in Delhi traffic, taking weekend trips with family, and cruising at 90–110 km/h than I do attacking corners or appreciating razor-sharp handling. Things like seat comfort, cabin space, suspension tuning, AC performance and fuel economy affect me every single day, while great handling only shines occasionally.

If you’re an enthusiast, you’ll probably love this car.
If you’re buying one family car to live with every day, I’d strongly recommend looking beyond the test drive.

**The car**

Variant: Signature AT (1.0 TSI)
Ownership: 6 months
Distance covered: 10,000 km
Usage: Roughly 70% city (Delhi NCR) and 30% highway (Shimla, Mussoorie, Dehradun and Uttarakhand road trips)

**Why I bought the Kylaq**
Before buying, my shortlist was fairly simple:

Skoda Kylaq

Honda Amaze

Mahindra 3XO

The Honda Amaze came very close.

But I eventually chose the Kylaq because I wanted something that felt safer, inspired confidence on highways, had decent ground clearance for hill trips and, most importantly, was fun to drive.

A few months into ownership, another vehicle bumped into the front of my car on the Meerut highway. Thankfully everyone was fine and the damage was largely limited to the headlamp and bumper. That incident quietly reinforced why I had prioritised safety in the first place.

Looking back, I don’t think I made the wrong decision.
I just think I was optimising for the wrong things.

**What I thought would matter**
When I bought my first car, I obsessed over:

Handling

Steering feel

Build quality

Highway confidence

Safety

After all, these are exactly the things every reviewer talks about.

**What actually mattered after 10,000 km**
After living with the car, I realised my daily life looks very different from my imagination.

Most of my driving isn’t through mountain roads.

It’s Delhi traffic.

It’s commuting on Ring Road.

It’s taking my parents or my partner out.

It’s weekend road trips where comfort matters much more than shaving a second off a corner.

That’s where my priorities completely changed.

**What I absolutely love**

**1. The way it drives**
This is undoubtedly the Kylaq’s biggest strength.

The steering is accurate, the chassis feels planted and the car simply loves corners.

Driving through Shimla and Mussoorie was genuinely enjoyable. The confidence it inspires on winding roads is unlike anything else I’ve driven in this price range.

If driving itself brings you happiness, this car delivers.

**2. Highway confidence**
At normal highway cruising speeds (90–110 km/h), the car feels extremely stable.

Yes, it feels capable of much higher speeds.

But interestingly, six months later I realised I don’t actually need that.

Indian highways aren’t places where I want to cruise at 140–150 km/h. I usually settle around 90–100 km/h, occasionally touching 110–120 where conditions allow.

In hindsight, I would’ve happily traded a little of that dynamic brilliance for more everyday comfort.

**3. Build quality**
The doors shut with a reassuring thud.

Everything feels solid.

It gives you confidence every time you get behind the wheel.

**The compromises I didn’t appreciate during the test drive**

**Seat comfort**
This has become my biggest complaint.

The seats are supportive but very firm.

After around two to three hours, I genuinely start feeling tired.

Both my partner and my mother independently mentioned exactly the same thing after travelling in the car.

It’s one of those things you simply cannot judge in a short test drive.

**Cabin space**
This was another surprise.

I knew the Kylaq wasn’t the biggest car in the segment.

What I didn’t realise was how enclosed it would feel during everyday use.

The rear seat is tighter than I expected.

Even the front cabin feels compact. Both my partner and my mother have commented that the dashboard feels unusually close, making the cabin feel more cramped than they expected.

Another odd thing I noticed is the distance between the front seats and the side windows. Collecting parking tickets or reaching outside the window requires me to lean much more than in most cars I’ve driven.

It’s a small thing, but once you notice it, you can’t unnotice it.

**Suspension**
This is probably where opinions will differ.

The suspension is definitely tuned on the firmer side.

That works brilliantly when you’re driving enthusiastically.

But in Delhi’s broken roads, even smaller potholes and expansion joints make themselves felt.

I’ve experimented with tyre pressures ranging from 30–35 PSI (currently running 32 PSI), but the overall character remains unchanged.

The result is that long journeys become tiring—not because of one single factor, but because the firm suspension combines with the firm seats and compact cabin.

**Air-conditioning**
Delhi summers exposed another weakness.

The AC eventually cools the cabin, but it takes longer than I’d like.

The cabin heats up quickly when parked in the sun and the glass doesn’t seem to reject much heat, so the AC has to work harder to keep up.

In peak summer, I often have to leave it at the coldest setting.

**Fuel economy**
I’ve consistently filled XP95/Power petrol.

These are my real-world figures:

Peak Delhi/Gurgaon bumper-to-bumper traffic: below 5 km/l
Heavy city traffic: 8–10 km/l
Moderate traffic: 13–15 km/l
Free-flowing Ring Road: 16–17 km/l
Highway cruising around 90–100 km/h: around 17 km/l

Overall summer average has been around **10–11 km/l**.

If my commute involved only inner city roads, I think it would be closer to **8–9 km/l**.

**Missing features that surprised me**
Since I bought the Signature variant, I knew I’d miss some equipment.

Still, two omissions genuinely surprised me:

No rear wiper.

No grab handles for the front occupants.

The missing grab handles became especially noticeable during hill drives.

**Infotainment & ownership niggles**
Wireless Apple CarPlay disconnected several times during my Dehradun and Mussoorie trips.

Software updates have improved it, but now I’m facing an intermittent microphone issue.

I’ve also recently noticed a slight tendency for the car to drift on downhill curves after my Shimla trip.

Tyre pressures are fine, so I’ll be getting the alignment checked during my next workshop visit.

**Service experience**
This was probably the weakest part of ownership.

My first scheduled service itself was free, and since some repair work was already being done at the same time, I only paid the documentation charges.

However, the workshop scratched my doors during service.

To Skoda India’s credit, they followed up proactively and offered to rectify everything.

The customer support experience was good.
The workshop experience wasn’t.

**Would I buy it again?**
This is the hardest question.

Six months ago my answer would’ve been an immediate yes.

Today…
Probably not.

Not because it’s a bad car.

Far from it.

It’s an excellent driver’s car.

But after living with it, I realised I value comfort more than I thought I would.

I value a quieter cabin.

Better seats.

A more compliant suspension.

More rear-seat space.

Lower running costs.

If I were buying today, I’d probably look much more seriously at something like the Honda Amaze, even if that meant giving up some handling and ground clearance.

**Who should buy this car?**

**Buy it if:**
You genuinely enjoy driving.
Handling and steering matter to you.
You frequently drive on highways and hill roads.
Safety is high on your priority list.

**Think twice if:**
Your parents or family travel with you regularly.
Comfort matters more than handling.
Rear-seat space is important.
Most of your driving is in city traffic.
Fuel economy is a major deciding factor.

**Final thoughts**
The biggest lesson this car taught me wasn’t about Skoda.

It was about myself.

When buying my first car, I focused almost entirely on how exciting it felt during a test drive.

Six months later, I realised the things that shape ownership are often the things you barely notice in those first 20 minutes.

Comfort.

Space.

Air-conditioning.

Fuel economy.

Workshop quality.

Those are the things you live with every single day.

The Kylaq delivered exactly what it promised—it never pretended to be anything other than a driver’s car.

I was the one who discovered that, at this stage of my life, I wanted something slightly different.

Hopefully this helps anyone who’s considering one.
Happy to answer any questions.
