question about research. Bug? Misunderstanding?

my friend bought stellaris recently and we have been playing a lot. Litteraly started and ended 6 playthroughs this week. Last game was on ensign and everything was okay. Next game we started and noticed that first recearch takes 130 months to do even though previous game it was about 15-30. We didnt change settings since last game and we also set them to default. What is wrong?
