Saturn, Alchemy and Planetary Symbolism (Part 2, long)

SpoilerDiscussion/Theory

A few days ago, I wrote a long analysis and interpretation about visual symbolism seen in Found Footage 3 and in the Backrooms movie: https://www.reddit.com/r/KanePixelsBackrooms/comments/1ty9j66/saturn_alchemy_and_planetary_symbolism/

See part 1 for context..

Here's a second part, to tie up a few loose ends and to elaborate and dig deeper on some of the stuff. While in the first part I tried to avoid speculation about how the visual implications could tie into the story and lore, I'll try to do that here to some extent. Not as in crafting new theories or anything, but pointing out which kind of theories the symbolism appears to support.

Before we start, I would like to point out some more things about the mnemonic systems. The idea of creating order by separating all the things into established mental compartments πŸ§ πŸ—ƒοΈ. I'm using emojis again, to mark key concepts where visual thinking and schizoid pattern matching may be appropriate. It's the base concept for a lot of the stuff referenced in part 1 and later in this post. Number emojis refer to mnemonic systems with that specific number of compartments.

The most simple, but not really useful example for such a system, would be dualism(2️⃣). Like everything is black/white, good/bad, female/male etc. We're taking an ultra-essentialist perspective about it, putting things into mental boxes, which as you may understand by the above example, can be "problematic" when taken too literal and too serious.

In western Alchemy, three-fold(3️⃣) systems are also very common, typically with compartments "Sulfur, Mercury, Salt" refering to three abstract ideas behind those labels, rather than to what they mean in actual Chemistry. but in this post we mostly use systems with 4️⃣(elements), 7️⃣(planets in a geocentric system) or 9️⃣(numerical digits). More sophisticated and common western esoteric systems, include the Tarot working with 78 buckets, just the Tarot trumps with 22 buckets, or the 22 Tarot trumps, but stacked on top of the 10 Sephiroth. While all those systems try to order the things in the universe, you can guess that a lot of that stuff ultimately is up to interpretation and can quickly get chaotic, especially when interconnecting concepts with different systems.

For example, "The Sun" may be considered "good" (or "bad", depending on context) in a simplistic dual system, "fire" in a system with four elements, "beauty" in a system with the tree of life and the very nuanced depiction of "archetype XIX" in the tarot system, all at the same time.

The Sublunary World, Planisphaerium Ptolemaicum (1660)

The Four Elements

In "home_27647.mov" at 0:45 we see a few frames showing the center of "Planisphaerium Ptolemaicum (1660)" depicting a sun with the words "MVNDVS SVBLVNARIS QVATVOR ELEMENTA COMPLECTENS"

It translates to "The sublunary world comprises the four elements.", basically evoking a four-fold system(4️⃣) where we only work with four elements as mnemonic compartments to categorize all the things into four buckets. I think it helps to label the elementary directly with colors. Red - Fire, Blue - Water, Yellow - Air 🟨, Green - Earth. Direction is variable, but order is fixed. Not just fixed, but seen as immensley important as it's meant to reflect the order of the name of God, as in like a function that describle the process of creating the universe or something like that. Point is, order is important, direction not so much.

Take 4 (in \"tetragrammatonal\" order)

4 colors, ordered by element in clockwise direction

I added the yellow emoji to "air" above, to implicitly refer to all the things we mentally put into the "yellow/air" compartment using this 4-fold system. While a dual system typically is about balance, with four-fold systems, we may also bring ordinal order and hierarchy back into the picture. It's also customary to map a dual system on top on a fourfold system. A typical fourfold pattern would be:

Fire - King, Water - Queen, Air - Prince 🟨, Earth - Princess.

This also implies gender (dual) like:

Fire - male, Water - female, Air - male, Earth - female.

As you can see in the above screenshot from "fixtures and tiles survey", the order goes clockwise and there is a red-yellow (male) axis, crossed with a blue-green (female) axis. Aristotle used a different order in his hot/cold wet/dry arrangement of the elements, so let's not get confused about that.

Of course there's a lot more of stuff to mentally put into those same four buckets. Most importantly, the four Hebrew letters of the name of God (two of which are the same) and the numerical values represented by those four letters (Tetragrammaton). Furthermore we can also bucket the four cardinal directions and -stars, or things and concepts that are indirectly linked with the elements such as Aristotles classical hot/cold-wet/dry cross.

The 4-fold element system is also the base for the four suits in the tarot.

Fire - Wands, Water - Cups, Air - Swords 🟨, Earth - Coins

Two Of Swords

Both the "Hook (6)" and the "Sword (7)" are also archtypical objects in the Mathers Table I've mentioned in part 1 (It's a system with 22 mnemonic-buckets)

Francisco de Goyas Saturn (and mushrooms)

While I treated the "Goya" link as a speculative interpretation in part 1, with the release of Kane Parsons "A Clear Blue Sky" the link to Goya, and thereby the link between Pirate Captain Clark and Saturn may as of now, pretty much be understood as confirmed.

Maybe the movie says more about the painting than vice versa, so let's have a look at just the Goya painting itself first:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturn_Devouring_His_Son#/media/File:Francisco_de_Goya,_Saturno_devorando_a_su_hijo_(1819-1823).jpg

In the first part of my analysis, I kinda just asserted that the devoured son in that painting is meant to represent a fly-mushroom because of his specific pose and because of his red over white color. This is of course a rather alchemy-pilled and non-standard reading of Goyas painting. It's not part of standard lore, so we can't really confirm that one with a Wikipedia article or with anything official like that. The motive is rooted in Greek mythology and was also often done by other painters and is generally understood as metaphor for 'time devouring all the things'.

So, the βŒ› time-fuckery aspect of Saturn basically.

Heinrich Cornelius Agrippas Saturn (and mushrooms)

Let's start again with the ⬛ 3x3 cupboard discussed in part 1 of this post.

\"The Agrippa Saturn Cupboard\" (see part 1 for context)

So this is the cupboard in front of which the Goya-coded climax of the movie happens and also where we see πŸ„ Redheaded Still Life standing during the scene at the table. In part 1, I was talking about putting ideas into mental mnemonic compartments πŸ§ πŸ—ƒοΈ, for the purpose of creating meaning by categorizing objects and ideas.

In relation to the nine(9️⃣) tic-tac-toe-like compartments on the Saturnalian cupboard, the relevance here would be "AIQ BKR"(9️⃣): The Qabalah of Nine Chambers. The same #-shape is also the base for the rather famous "Pigpen" cipher.

While the above method attempts to put all the things into nine different buckets, Agrippa often just used seven categories(7️⃣) that he linked up with the planets(7️⃣) directly.

He then ordered and categorized all the plants, all the metals and all the animals etc. and (mentally) put them into seven different imaginary buckets with the planet label on it.

This is similar to what I did above with the cupbord, and what I also did in part 1 by declaring some props from the movie, such as plates, rings, the speaker and the freezer next to the cupboard as 'saturnine'. Not necessarily as an absolute, but in context of the movies visuals.

3 concentric white rings (restrictive theme)

Here's a link to HC Agrippas text from which I'll be pulling the quotes and descriptions:

"What Things Are Saturnine, or Under the Power of Saturn (1531)": https://sacred-texts.com/eso/pnm/pnm34.htm

About birds in relation to Saturn he wrote:

"Amongst birds 🟨, those are Saturnine which have long necks and harsh voices, as cranes, ostriches, and peacocks, which are dedicated to Saturn and Juno."

Pointing this out, because both versions of Pirate Captain Clark have a white Ostrich 🟨 feather 🟨 on their hat. It's not pointed out explicitly in the movie that it is the feather of an Ostrich, but that's what it most likely would be. Like if you order a shitty Halloween costume of Captain Hook or of the dude from Pirates of the Caribean, you'll know it's prime quality if the product description says "with original Ostrich feather" or somthing like that.

As for the other two birds, we see in the movie, I can't really link the parrot and the seagull to anything related. The imagery with the crashing seagull is still very strong, had it been a dove that scene would be quite loaded in terms of symbolism.

just a seagull (image rotated)

Another link to point out, although this may be coincidental as it's just generic sultan-pirate swag, is that both versions of Pirate Captain Clark wear a huge ear ring. This is symbolically linked to both, the actual rings of Saturn as a planet and also to the πŸ”Š sense of hearing which is understood as ruled by Saturn. I think it's a (fake) gold ring and according to Agrippa, gold while typically solar, is to be considered saturnine amonst metals "by reason of its weight".

It's also notable that we don't see the βŒ› Jolly Roger anywhere in the movie, because that's scary and Captain Clark needs to be family friendly to sell his furniture on TV.

The 3x3 grided armchair, located *exactly* \"Behind The Throne\" when it breaks (Metatron reference?)

Back to Agrippas occult philosophy about things that are "saturnine, or under the power of Saturn" (heavily redacted to keep it on point):

"Amongst plants and trees, [...] things which are never sown πŸ„, and never bear fruit πŸ„, [...] the pine-tree πŸ„, [...]" and elsewhere he writes "the permanent continuation of all things is ascribed to Saturn. Also, [...] all roots [are] from Saturn [...]".

Bringing this up to link the red X-Mas tree (from behind which we get the still life that I linked to the Amanita Muscaria in part 1) to Saturn and also to point at a possible link, between Saturn and mushrooms as things which are 'never sown', although as far as I could find, Agrippa didn't explicitly link mushrooms to Saturn himself. Visually, the Saturn-linked roots may also be interpreted to point back to the life-forms from Kanes earlier Backrooms videos.

Point being, in Biology the pine tree and the mushroom are closely related in a symbiosis and the symbolism around Archibald πŸ„ and the Redheaded Still Life πŸ„ supports the lore-theory that eatable still life "is" a mushroom, or at least "is like" a mushroom somehow, if not even just symbolic. Lore wise the mushroom link may exclude the copy version of Pirate Clark as we see him have humanoid anatomy (x-rays at A-Sync) and we also see him bleed, but technically hes understood to be a still life aswell (idk?tbh). In my opinion, the more interesting question about ALS isn't so much what he is, but what role he serves when he has his moment in the movie and what he's attracting attention to (eg. compare to the Santa character in Richard Kelleys 2009 movie "The Box").

Johannes Keplers Saturn (no more mushrooms here)

Another historic German dude who was influential in crafting western occult lore (and also actual science) was Johannes Kepler (1571 - 1630). It was at a time when geocentric world-views were prevalent and the earth was perceived at the center of seven planets, which included the Sun and the moon, with Saturn being the outermost and slowest of the seven. Like Agrippa, Kepler was also obsessed with describing the universe in perfect harmony and order and asserting that perfect order is the case in the sky/heavens.

His approach to prove it, was to try and fit Platonic Solids in between the planetary orbits: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/19/Kepler-solar-system-1.png

The outermost ring, represents the orbit of Saturn and the cube is there linked to Saturn, because Keplers assertion was, that you could *exactly* fit a giant imaginary perfect cube between the orbit of Saturn and the closer next planetary orbit. Of course we know this isn't exactly true at all, but the reason I'm bringing this up is to point at it as the primary memetic reason, for linking Saturn to a cube. There's a whole lot to unpack here about Saturn in relation to ⬛ black cubes.

⬛βšͺβšͺβšͺ

Parsons Saturn (and mushrooms?)

Let's again look at the link to Agrippas Magic Square of Saturn ⬛9️⃣, which numerically adds up to a total of 45 (as 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9 = 45). This isn't like, just pulling numbers out of my 'hat connection to make it fit theory, the symbolic link between Saturn and the number 45 ⬛ is actually quite strong.

Agrippas Magic Square of the Sun may basically be the reason why you know 666 as a memetic number. 45 (as 3x15) is to Saturn what 666 (as 6x111) is to the Sun (compare spirits "ZAZEL"/45,"Nachiel"/111).

Incredibly strong solar vibes here...

Here's some very simple 'English Ordinal Gematria', meaning A=1, B=2, C=3 etc.:

It's a simple method, as in not a good or very practical, because the value a name or word adds up to, highly depends on the number of letters in it. Still:

CLARK = C(3)+L(12)+A(1)+R(18)+K(11) = 45

PHIL = P(16)+H(8)+I(9)+L(12) = 45

Found Footage 3 runtime is listed as 45:01. While this may not be intentional (it may even be a rounding artifact of the platform), the proximity to 45 is suggestive enough to mention it here. Let's have a look at the room in FF3 in which we see still life for the first time (FF3 23:00+).

It's arguably Saturn coded for a number of reasons.

8-fold BAF, but where iconic yellow parts??

  • It's the room where the πŸ”Š sound is coming from (playing ⬛ 煀气灢)
  • Black Speaker Boxes ⬛. Like not just ordinary speakers, literal black cube ones.
  • There are ⛓️ 8 light fixtures on the ceiling. They're in a 3x3 arrangement.
  • There's also a comically large ⛓️ 8-bladed "Big Ass Fan" on the ceiling.

The fan 🟨 is of course relevant as such, because like wind-chimes πŸŸ¨πŸ”Š, it's unmistakably a very strong symbol (meme) for the element of air 🟨 which is kinda at the center in all this (yellow, ruled by Saturn trough Aquarius).

I heard gossip on the internet, about Kane being very serious about attaching the yellow parts of the Big Ass Fans (it's a brand name, they're really named that) in a short and pressing timeframe, right before finishing the movie. Ironically, we don't see the yellow parts of the BAF in either FF3 or in the movie. (am i missing something?)

The Yellow/Fan link is basically a sign of coherence, since both are signified by air, therefore belonging together in the same way as I described the Blue/Cups in part 1 as coherent for water. This symbolic link is of course already present in the actual fan. The choice of using a fan model that has iconic yellow parts, is in essence an act of coherencemaxxing if you will.

35 Pitfalls 🟨 and the 36th Chamber 🟨

mock throne?

The 5x7 arrangement of the pitfalls is specifically mentioned by one of the A-Sync scientists in "Static Dead End". Above I've mentioned AIQ BRK(9️⃣), the 'qabalah of nine chambers' in relation to Agrippas 3x3 Magic Square of Saturn ⬛.

We can think of the cells in Agrippas magic squares as chambers.

.....

If we do the same with Agrippas 6x6 Magic Square of the Sun we get 36 chambers.

This is where it starts to get confusing and a bit ambiguous, since up to here all the yellow squares were meant to signify air and related concepts. Yellow is of course also (and in a more direct way) linked to The Sun, even tough the suns element would rather be fire in such a system.

So I tried googling for an example that has Agrippas Magic 6x6 (36) Square in that scpecific Yellow as it's meant to be. Found something else instead. It's an image from some obscure blog, dated 2015/02:

https://singularityq.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/wpid-temple-of-the-sun-magic-square-666.png

\"wpid-temple-of-the-sun-magic-square-666.png\", from some obscure blog, dated 2015/02

It may be seen as a visual parallel, but the actual link is Agrippa's 6Γ—6 Sun square (36 chambers) which visually and numerically echoes the pitfalls and the yellow color-coding.

1978 movie \"36th Chamber of Shaolin\". Protagonist with rings, bending air

RSITS - mastering the elements or whatever

There's probably also lots stuff to relating to 8️⃣-fold systems (8-pointed sun as opposed to 12-pointed sun, Clarks 8-spoked helm and possibly other octa-coded stuff in the movie), but those typically call for more eastern systems and interpretations, which I'm not very fam with.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dharmachakra

Anyways, near the image limit and running out of stuff to write and reason about, so from here on, random bullshit go it is:

ζ—₯

The beautiful splendor(8) sun(6) is caged ⛓️ and sealed with a blue ring

Water (blue ring) vs Fire (the sun)>!water always wins this, (...right?)!<.
