Looking for a department in the Columbus, Ohio area
I have been a cop for about a year now in the northeastern Ohio area. I am hoping to get some insight on where I could lateral to. I lived in the greater Columbus area in the past for a short time and liked it. I always had an interest in working for Columbus PD but I am open to working at another department in the area.
Here’s some aspects that I am looking for in a department.
-
Work-life balance/Schedule
I understand the unpredictability of a first responder role but I want to work for a department that at least makes an attempt to not meddle with the schedule. From what I’ve heard about them, 12 hour shifts are pretty great and allow a decent work life balance and leave little room for admin to mess with it, but they are not my end all be all. Like I said, I don’t mind working extra shifts or being moved around, but if I look at my schedule and say, “Why the hell did they put me on a different shift than my assigned one?” or “Why did they split my days off?” and the only answer I get is “Welcome to _____ police department” I wouldn’t be very happy. -
Work Culture
I am a young and new officer looking to learn and grow. I enjoy being proactive. Making stops, getting warrants, and going for drug arrests. I want to work for a department that not only likes to see proactive officers, but encourages proactively through training and just overall outlook. I would like to work with people who are also proactive (or at least will help on my stops/warrant services). I enjoy working with people with that mindset because not only do they help you out on your calls, but they won’t dodge calls either. There will always be people who are lazy, but all I ask is that admin does not encourage lazy behavior. -
Career advancement
One of my goals is to become a S.W.A.T. officer. I want to work for a department where that is available to me. -
Training
Training is very important to me and I want to work for a department where training is taken very seriously
I know every department has its strengths and weaknesses and I’m not asking for a department to cover all these aspects perfectly. I am just looking for a department that I can enjoy working for and these are some aspects that I value highly.
I made this post mainly looking for a fellow patrolman’s opinion. These are things that you really can’t feel out through job listings, interviews, and ride alongs. If you work for either Columbus or a department in the area, please either comment or send me a DM.
