2.5 yo has sudden issues with cold cups - advice?

Behaviour

Repost since I had links in my last post.

I have a 2.5 year old son, and all of a sudden he's having meltdowns when he is handed a cup that's cold. He uses metal water bottles.

If we pour him a cup of milk and he doesn't drink it all, we'll put the entire cup in the fridge and give it back to him when he asks for milk again. This has never been a problem.

Except this past week he starts sobbing and tries to dump it out when we hand him a cold cup from the fridge, he says its too cold and he wants "new milk, not cold". So I'll have him go into the kitchen with me and we pour it into a new cup. That's okay for about 5 minutes until the cold milk makes the new cup cold.

He hasn't been drinking milk at daycare for the past 2 weeks (they keep the entire cup in the fridge) and I'm guessing this new "cold cup" issue is the culprit.

What do I do here? Do I get new cups with handles to try to be accepting of this quirk, or do we try to work through it with the cups we have? This morning I put a sock over his cup so it wasn't cold, and he was find with that, but do I do that for daycare? I usually can figure out how to handle things, but this one is new and foreign to me!

I don’t want him to be coddled and we work hard to not allow that, but sensory issues are new to me.

To answer a question on the previous post: he doesn’t have issues with other cold objects, it’s just his cup he doesn’t like to be cold. He does get really upset when things are wet, but we talk through that one and work it out together.
