Need help understanding three houses system

Im a huge fan of fire emblem I've played awakening, ans birth rights and conquest so im familiar with s turn based system. I finally got around to getting a switch and im so confused about the battle mechanics.. like im used to how to change classes and use XP and every other mechanic but im not sure how to build skills and talents, im in chapter five and barely getting by the battles (im blue lions btw)
