He asked for space … F24 and M25

my bf and I been together for almost 2 years. The last month been rocky. Back to back arguing just a toxic mess. A week ago he told me he wanted space because he doesn’t want out relationship to get worse . I agree and said I’ll respect his space . Yesterday he texted me telling me how his friend was murdered . I told him I’m here for him. He left me on delivered till today . Again he texts me Hey how are you i responded then he goes back to mia. I’m used to speaking everyday to him and being around each other alot it’s weird. Idk is this normal ? How should I go about that ? Is this the start to the end ? should I be ready to walk away idk
