Hope for hydrangeas?

We had a large Maple tree removed from our front yard last year. Our front yard is on the North side of the house, but with the tree gone, hardly any shade in the Summer. I didn’t realize how my hydrangeas would suffer. They didn’t flower at all this year. I’m assuming it’s because they’re heat stressed. And, it’s only late June in Northeast Oklahoma, Zone 7b, I think. I just put up some cover from the Sun. But, I’m wondering if i should cut them all back and hopefully they’ll recover from the heat? I would hate to lose them, but their chances seem slim. Any advice short of relocating them. The husband and I are 74, so that’s probably not happening. Any advice is welcome.
