Does HDMI work with game cube?

I just set up my gamecube after years of not using it. Lost my cords so I bought another one except instead of the red, yellow, and white cord I bought an hdmi adapter yet when I plug it in nothing displays. Do I need a red, white and yellow cord instead of the HDMI adapter cord in order to get the display up on the tv?
