swallowing anxiety
I first experienced this when I was 10 years old, I remember going to ihop the day after I broke my ankle and felt like my throat was closing and I couldn't swallow. I think I always had a little bit of this (always ate small bites, never ate steak cause I couldn't break it down enough), and I guess it eventually went back to normal? never got any professional help, in any case.
it came back this october when I got wayyy too high while taking wellbutrin lmao. I had a bad panic attack while high, and later that week had a panic attack while driving. I quit weed (and wellbutrin) completely, but my anxiety has generally been worse ever since. the swallowing anxiety first happened when I was trying to eat fries while driving and I simply could not, and ever since it has only manifested when I try to eat while in the car.
I went on a road trip last week and it's been pretty terrible ever since. I knew I definitely wouldn't be able to eat while driving, but I thought that as a passenger I would be mostly okay. I was not! it felt like everything was getting stuck in my throat and like it was gluing it shut. I couldn't even swallow my own spit (though I think this was because I was having dry mouth from car anxiety). certain foods made me aware of my throat which made me freak out (like dot's pretzels or jerky). but, even when we weren't in the car I was kind of having anxiety about swallowing, and now that I've been back home for 2 days it's almost worse. it feels like my throat is swollen every time I eat. I haven't done a great job at keeping track of what makes it worse, but the thing is that it's happening with everything I eat. I'm not allergic to anything, but one of my biggest fears is suddenly developing an allergy? so like when I try to eat nuts I kind of start freaking out and then my throat feels like it's swollen, even though I'm breathing and having no other symptoms and it goes away after a couple of minutes. I just tried to eat dried mango and I just....can't. it's making me too aware of my throat. I've been eating goldfish but if I eat too many at a time it forms like, a glue bolus. I tried drinking a chai latte but again it made me too aware of my throat and then I couldn't eat anything for a while after. I ate veggies and hummus and that was mostly fine, but I had to take tiny bites and lots of water in between. eggs and toast with jelly was fine, but again I had lots of water in between small bites.
I just can't tell if my throat feeling swollen is actually happening or if it's because of anxiety. I'm like 99% certain it's anxiety, because it's fine when I'm distracted, but when I become aware of my throat is when it starts feeling swollen. but, am I becoming aware of my throat because it is actually swelling? I don't want to go to urgent care for nothing but I'm also kind of freaking out that there's something medical going on. I just don't know what it would be because there's no common denominator to the foods causing this. plus, my breathing is totally fine and normal, and I don't have any allergies. I just want to eat!! :')
has anyone else experienced this? how did you overcome it?
