Hi all! I tried out a 1991 Gibson J200 at my local shop today and really connected with it. I’ve played a few more recent ones and always liked them, but this one just felt and sounded right.

Cosmetically excellent, a few minor scratches on the back but in great shape considering it’s a 35 year old instrument. And the most important part, the sound was incredible. It’s opened up so nicely - amazing volume and projection but still clear and balanced. Action was super smooth and playable, with good neck relief and a decent amount of saddle left. Multiple other customers came over while I was playing to ask about the guitar and say how nice it sounded.

Only potential problem, it has some old electronics. I would want a pickup so I can gig it, but not sure how viable these are compared with the modern stuff in my other guitars (Baggs, Taylor ES2). I asked the shop about it, we couldn’t figure out what exactly it is but the guy was pretty sure it’s factory installed. I tried plugging in, got a bunch of pops and crackles and couldn’t really get a good feel for the sound. They told me it probably just needs cleaning, so their tech is taking a look at it and they’ll call me back in the next day or 2 with an update. If they don’t work, it’s not the end of the world and a Baggs would probably sound way better anyway. But I don’t love that it has holes drilled into the side, especially if the pickup is broken and I’d be replacing with something more modern/minimal.

A few thoughts/questions…

1) Anybody recognize these electronics? I included a shot of the knobs and the box inside. Looks active (there was also a 9v battery on the other side but not pictured) and has an end pin jack, but beyond that I really don’t know much about early 90s pickups

2) They’re asking $3500. Seems in the ballpark based on other examples I can find online, especially for a super clean one like this. If the electronics end up working, would you buy it at that price? If the electronics are busted, how much lower would you try to go?

Thank you!

Thoughts on this 1991 J200? Any 90s electronics sleuths out there?
