Why does the Church make it so difficult to resign?

General Discussion

Hello everyone, I've been thinking about the whole resignation process.

First of all, when I got baptized, they asked me some really strange questions, like where my parents were born and their dates of birth. I remember thinking, "Why the hell do they need that?" But then I convinced myself they probably just wanted to make sure I wasn't using fake documents (I was so naive)...

Then I had to start using the Church Tools app, and I was shocked to see that everyone's personal information was there: addresses, email addresses, phone numbers... No one ever asked for my permission to use my personal data like that. That can be really dangerous in so many ways, and it leaves you completely exposed to everyone.

I expected the Church to keep membership records, but I never really thought much about what that actually meant.

Here in Brazil, I don't know many stories of people resigning. Most people seemed to use QuitMormon, but now I've seen that you have to send a notarized letter, which is just insane. Nobody ever asked for my permission to collect my personal information. I never signed anything at all, and now, in order to leave, I have to sign a letter and get it notarized.

Fine, I'd do anything to get out of this shit, but my financial situation is pretty difficult right now, especially since I'd have to do the process for two people.

I tried asking my bishop. I even tried using the Church handbook. But now they also say you have to give the bishop a notarized letter before they'll remove your records.

Seriously, this whole thing is making me so depressed. I wish I had never found this church.

I just want to forget all of this, but it feels impossible.

Even when people have already resigned, I still see stories about members continuing to contact them. It makes me wonder... isn't that illegal?

Sorry for the silly rant.
