Staying online and connected in Uganda
It is clear to any thinking person can that Uganda is headed for a period of some difficulty in which there will likely be increased surveillance and curtailing access to information. We had the internet switched off just this January. We need to stay a step ahead and create secure means of accessing information. Below is a list of some tools you can use to stay connected and keep communications secure.
1. Secure Browsing
- DuckDuckGo Browser: Designed to eliminate tracking and mask your traffic through decentralized networks. Essential for accessing restricted news sites anonymously.
- Psiphon / ProtonVPN: Open-source, audited tools built specifically to bypass state-level censorship and content filtering when traditional access is throttled.
2. Emergency & Mesh Communications
- Briar: An end-to-end encrypted messaging app designed specifically for activists and journalists. It operates without a central server; if the internet is shut down entirely, Briar can sync messages locally via Bluetooth and local Wi-Fi mesh networks between nearby devices.
