How do people feel attracted to other people in their league?

I was wondering how does it work in your brain that you feel attracted to people who are about as beatiful/ugly as you are yourself. Does your brain just know how beatiful you are or does everyone feel attracted to the most beatiful people at first and learn who to date because more beatiful people reject them?
