I built an AI-powered website for a client. Here's every problem I ran into and exactly how I fixed them.

A few months ago, a local business owner approached me to build them a website with AI features a chatbot, auto-content generation, and smart product recommendations. I said yes confidently. I had no idea what was coming.

Here's the honest breakdown:

πŸ”΄ Challenge 1: The AI responses were too slow

The chatbot was taking 4-6 seconds to respond. The client hated it. Users were bouncing.

βœ… Fix: Switched from a general API call to streaming responses. Instead of waiting for the full answer, the text now appears word by word just like ChatGPT. Users felt it was instant. Problem solved.

πŸ”΄ Challenge 2: AI was giving wrong information about the business

The chatbot kept making up opening hours, prices, and services that didn't exist. Classic hallucination problem.

βœ… Fix: Built a simple RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation) system. Fed the AI only the client's actual business data menus, prices, FAQs. Now it only answers from real information. Zero hallucinations.

πŸ”΄ Challenge 3: API costs were exploding

After 2 weeks live, the OpenAI bill was way higher than expected. The client panicked.

βœ… Fix: Added response caching for common questions. If 100 users ask what are your hours? the AI only runs once and caches the answer. Cut costs by 70% immediately.

πŸ”΄ Challenge 4: Mobile experience was broken**

The AI chat widget looked great on desktop. On mobile it was covering half the screen and wouldn't close properly.

βœ… Fix: Rebuilt the widget as a floating button that expands only when tapped. Added proper z-index layering and touch event handling. Tested on 6 different phone sizes.

πŸ”΄ Challenge 5: Client kept changing the AI's personality.

Every week the client wanted the chatbot to sound different more formal, then friendly, then professional again.

βœ… Fix: Built a simple admin panel where the client can edit the system prompt themselves without touching any code. Game changer for client relationships.

The result: The website now handles 200+ AI conversations per day, costs under $15/month to run, and the client renewed for a second project.

If you're building AI features for clients the technical part is only 40% of the job. Managing expectations and keeping costs low is the other 60%.

Happy to answer any questions. What challenges have you faced building AI products for clients?
