doctor visit blues(?)
i (24,transmasc/nb) went to the obgyn for pcos and left with mixed feelings.
i was referred after being told by my primary that birth control was the only way to treat pcos. i was hoping to get metformin given that id heard of it used off label for the insulin resistance pcos causes. to be honest, i had originally wanted to try testosterone given id heard great things about it from trans dudes with pcos, but life stuff means that has to wait, so i was hoping to do metformin for the forseeable future. i did not want to go back on birth control.
at the obgyn appointment today, i listed the symptoms that had been bothering me (heat intolerance, cysts bursting, pmdd) and her response was kind of odd. first, she wanted to do a ton of tests to confirm i actually had pcos (ive been diagnosed with it for 10 years). bloodwork, scheduled ultrasound, and a biopsy that hurt WAY more than id been led to believe it would (some cramping my ass). then, she told me she'd never heard of pcos having any symptoms beyond hirsutism and irregular periods. this i was a little weirded out by.
after her politely saying that she wouldnt prescribe it to me, i ended up leaving with a script for progesterone birth control because atp im tired and just dont wanna be symptomatic anymore. i guess i just wanted to (besides vent) ask if this is normal? should i just take the bc or keep pushing? being autistic and anxious makes it hard for me to advocate for myself when i need to, so idk if this is an example of that or if my expectations were faulty.
this was in CA with kaiser if that helps.
