My opinion on Eren and the finale (long theory/rant)

SpoilerEnding Spoilers - Discussion/Question

I've been thinking a lot about the ending, and I see so many people talk about whether or not Eren was actually trapped in a time loop and what his actual options were. I just want to add my two cents on the Rumbling, Eren, and the finale in general.

Eren is neither evil nor good; he’s just a scarred person carrying a heavy burden and limited path in an imperfect world; he has power, so he’s going to use it, even if he knows it’s wrong. He can only be himself. I think the rumbling is the only option because it’s Eren who has the power. He cannot force himself into actions that are not him in the past, and he is a vengeful and hating person. He confines himself by his own disposition. He is responsible, which is why he thinks he’s going to Hell. I just think there’s a case to be made that he, as Eren, did not have options that others believed he had because of the fact that he was not others but also acknowledging that those limited options were the result of his own desires for indiscriminate vengeance and freedom.

There’s also the Attack Titan time aspect of things. Eren can affect himself only in ways that Eren would accept otherwise Eren would not turn out to be the Eren doing the affecting, which is impossible for the Eren we know. His past is shaped by his future which can only influence the past in ways he would both accept as his present influencer and past self. People always wonder why Eren can't just influence the past through his Attack Titan (and Founder) powers so that everything bad did not happen. However, that creates a paradox. The Eren that is capable of influencing the past is the Eren who is a product of those tragedies, which have formed his will and mission. If he were to change the past in a way that would lead to those tragedies not happening, he as the influencer would not come to be in the first place, and therefore he could not do the influencing. Not only this, but it would also go against his character if he were to actively work against his own goals using his power.

Eren is a hateful, vengeful, and violent person; he wants vengeance, and the only thing that can quell these aspects of himself is his love of his friends. This is why he still wants to eliminate 100% of the life outside the walls, but limits himself to 80%, so his friends could live long lives. Eren's two major motivations are vengeance and protecting his friends (which we see in the ways he influences both Eren Kruger and Grisha). He views both of these things as being part of his drive for "freedom". Eren's commitment to the Rumbling while also allowing his friends the freedom to stop him at 80% is the ultimate expression of his motivations and deeply consistent and necessary with his character.

So this is my opinion on the character aspect and technical aspect of why Eren committed the Rumbling and why he allowed things to play out as they did.

Hopefully my thoughts make sense to some of you.
