Amazon May Shift AI Work to OpenAI and Nova After Anthropic Changes Its Pricing
Amazon is reportedly evaluating OpenAI models and its own Nova systems to reduce its dependence on Anthropic’s Claude.
Under a renegotiated agreement, Amazon will reportedly pay Anthropic based on the number of tokens its products consume rather than the amount of computing time used.
Token-based billing could become expensive for coding agents and other complex applications that process and generate enormous amounts of text. Amazon disputes the claim that the new arrangement will increase its costs.
Claude currently powers several Amazon services, including Kiro, Amazon Connect, and Amazon Quick. Amazon also sells Claude to more than 100,000 AWS customers through Bedrock.
The reported pricing tension comes despite an enormous partnership between the companies:
- Amazon has invested $13 billion in Anthropic and may invest up to $20 billion more.
- Anthropic has committed to spending over $100 billion on AWS technology during the next decade.
- Anthropic plans to secure up to five gigawatts of Amazon Trainium computing capacity.
Amazon is not abandoning Claude. It is reportedly exploring whether some workloads could be moved to OpenAI or Nova when those models are cheaper or capable enough.
