The word 'Veda' is derived from the root विद्' (vid) which means knowledge. Thus the etymological meaning of the Veda is the book of true knowledge - physical as well as spiritual. Although the Veda is one but on account of its dealing with different topics it has been further divided into four books or Samhitas which are called the Rigveda, the Yajurveda, the Samveda and the Atharvaveda. The Rigveda is the biggest of all having more than 10000 hymns or mantras. Total number of hymns in all the four Vedas is above 20 thousand.

Rigveda deals with knowledge mostly superhuman. It has been divided into ten Mandals which consist of many Suktas written in the praise of God, though one in existence but having different names. As the famous Rigvedic hymn says that God is one, but the wise men call Him by different names. Agni, Indra, Mitra, Varuna, Pushan, Soma are the different names of the same power which is seen working in the world and the whole universe has been created by His superhuman power.

Yajurveda mainly deals with different yajnas or sacrifices as the European scholars call them. This Veda can be called as the divine book of work and worship. Agnihotra, Ashvamedha, Rajsuya, Sarvamedha, Narmedha and many other types of sacrifices have been mentioned in the different chapters of this Veda, the last being the Ishopanishat which deals in the nature of the Supreme Spirit. It contains only eighteen mantras but at the same time it shows the highest flight of Indian mysticism and spiritualism. Its first hymn describes the fact that by one Supreme Ruler is this universe pervaded, even every world in whole circle of Nature. Enjoy pure delight, O man, by abandoning all thoughts of this perishable world, and covet not the wealth of any existing creature.

Samveda is specially arranged for musical set-up of mantras. It has very little originality of its own, as most of the hymns have been borrowed from the Rigveda. Samveda is further divided into three Kaands or parts - Aagney, Pavamaan and Endra kaands.

Atharva Veda is related with physical and material sciences such as physics, chemistry, medicine and biology, astronomy and mathematics. It also deals with psychology, sociology and political science. Swami Dayanand was the first Vedic scholar who specifically mentioned that the Vedas contain the element of all true knowledge and it is the primary duty of every Arya to study and propagate the Vedic teachings which are contained in these holy scriptures.
