Is this really just a viral infection?
Hello,
32M, 6'2" inches, 215 pounds. No smoking, rarely drink, no other health concerns or conditions.
Symptom onset: 23rd of June, sore throat, thick mucus in throat, but none in sinus, body aches, headaches, neck aches, fatigue, no appetite. Temperature took a few times between the 23rd and the 26th, no fever. Self treated with lots of fluid, took niquil on the 24th and slept horribly with crazy dreams, and took Mucinex DM on the 25th and slept even worse, again with crazy dreams. Not sure if the dreams were caused by the dextromethorphan, or from a fever.
Saw an online NP on the 26th who diagnosed it as a common cold/viral infection.
Morning of June 27th, woke up with more intense body aches, neck aches, and headaches, and fever. Temperature ranged between 101 - 103.7. Appetite diminished even more, and remained that way through this morning. Headaches were to the point that even taking a step shot pain up my neck and around my entire skull. Symptoms remained this way through the AM of the 30th. Self treated with fluids, and alternating 100mg acetaminophen and 400mg ibuprofen. Barely slept at all either night due to chills, and fever dreams. Went to urgent care on the 29th, they confirmed cold/viral infection. Took strep test, negative. Also negative for covid, flu A & flu B. Prescribed benzonatate 200mg, azithromycin, 250mg, and promethazine DM, 5ml, all of which I began today.
Beginning on June 30th, temperature stayed under 99 for about 4 hours this morning, and symptoms overall improved, but is now back up above 101. Headaches are back but not as bad as they were, but are getting worse.
I don't want to doubt the diagnosis I've gotten, but this does not feel like any cold I've ever gotten. I have no runny nose, my throat is less sore than it was the 23rd - 26th, and I am producing less mucus than I was over those days. (Maybe cough up one globule of phlegm every one to two hours or so, thick and yellow in color). Do these symptoms, onsets, and durations align with the diagnosis I have been given? Could it be something worse, such as meningitis? At what point do I need to seek a higher level of care than an urgent care clinic? Not sure I will be able to be seen by my primary care doctor anytime soon.
If you've gotten this far, thank you.
