Am I wasting my potential?
So I'm 25, working in education as a paraprofessional (I'm in the classroom, helping the kids with learning/behavioral disabilities). This is my first job after finishing my Bachelor's, wbee I majored in Communication Sciences and Disorders with the goal of becoming a speech pathologist. I didn't want to commit to grad school right away (didn't want to take and out loans, plus I wanted more experience that was at least adjacent to the field). I make $47k and am salaried with benefits, which is really good compared to the nationwide average for paras.
I just can't help but wonder if I'm wasting my potential. I met up with an old friend, friends since we were in school, to have lunch with her at her office. She had a great performance review today and now she's making literally twice my salary. She works in one of those awesome high rises, and the company kitchen is always fully stocked with snacks. I was so happy for her, and I also felt kind of like a loser. My ducks are in a row, don't get me wrong--I'm not living above my means or anything; I still live with my parents and don't have a car (and try to use transit instead of ubering when I can), I saved up so I can pay for grad school without loans, and I try not to spend frivolously. I have an emergency fund, a Roth IRA, and contribute to the 403b my employer provides.
But I suddenly just feel so off about it all. My needs and wants are taken care of right now. I'll probably be able to provide a modest living for myself (though that's something I'm anxious about a lot lately; will I be able to provide myself the life I was given as a kid?). I just feel like something is wrong with me, or that I'm not playing "the game" right somehow. I think speech pathology is an interesting field that I'd be good at, but I realized a while ago that I'm probably not the kind of person that has a *calling*, or like a goal career that will permanently fulfill me.
But in that case, shouldn't I just find something interesting about, I dunno, investment banking and start trying to make as much cash as possible? Why am I sitting here doing a job that earns me 50 cents for every dollar my friend makes, then going to school to get licensed to do a job where I'll be lucky to catch up to where she is by the time I'm 35, and probably never get to where she might be by the time she's 35? I know money can't buy happiness, but I guess I'm grappling with the fact that I still want to get paid more. But I don't know if I can hack it in corporate--I don't know if I'm ambitious enough to earn the money I feel like I deserve.
