Do you go to hell if not baptized?

Seems absurd to me that you need to be baptized in order to go to heaven. I'm not going to go down the path of asking, "well what about people in uncontacted tribes" but rather what about an old woman who has lived her whole life putting her faith in Jesus Christ? Doing nothing but good, and helping others, and having full faith in Jesus, will she not be saved if she isn't baptized? And what about someone who is baptized but evil, and someone who was good, but wasn't baptized? This entire thing is confusing me, I thought faith alone saved?
