Corrective Experiences
People like to say that time heals.
I don't think it does.
Time simply teaches you how to carry what happened. You learn which memories to avoid, which streets to stop walking, which songs to skip before they reach the chorus. You become efficient at surviving your own history.
Healing begins much later.
It begins the first time someone doesn't leave after you make a mistake.
The first time an apology is accepted instead of weaponized.
The first time silence isn't punishment.
The first time kindness arrives without asking for payment.
Those moments don't erase the past. They argue with it.
Every genuine experience that contradicts an old wound forces your mind to reconsider what it believed was true. Slowly, the sentence "This is how people are" becomes "Maybe that was just the people I knew."
You don't heal because time passes.
You heal because, eventually, life gives you evidence that the past was never the whole story.
