Buying new units w/o paying real money

Might violate rules of megathreads but all the ones i see are like years old, but can you still buy new characters without using actual money?

i played when it first came out and remember there being coins and paid currency but i just came back and only the paid currency remains, and there doesnt seem to be any other way to get new characters than pulling out ur wallet
