Gold Card electrician wanting to move from domestic to commercial - where do I start?

This is gonna be a long rant.

I got my gold card last year

Most of my experience is domestic testing, inspection and installation/rewires

Heres the order of which I got my qualification

  1. Level 2 in Electrical Installation (July 2019) in college

  2. Level 3 in Electrical Installation (July 2020) in college

  3. 18th Edition (08 july 2021) saved and paid as a mate doing EICRs and domestic installs/ rewires for a small company

  4. 2391 inspection and testing ( January 2022) saved and paid as a mate doing EICRs and domestic installs/ rewires for a small company

  5. am2 (march 2025) saved and paid as an "electrician" doing EICRs and remedials for a large social housing company

  6. nvq level 3 (completed June 2025) paid in installments and did a lot of temporary or cheap work to achieve the minimal containment and Installation requirements to pass and then went to work as an "electrician" for a large social housing company.

My issue is that i want to escape this hell. I dont want to limit myself to domestic works and I would like to do some commercial installs, mainly I'd like to do a lot of metal munching and 3 phase board installs as thats where my skills are lacking the most. Whilst its true I did complete my nvq In 2025, I started it in 2022 and did a lot of temporary work to get the min install requirements which did include metal containment ive never actually been on a job Long enough to make those skills stick. Its 2026 and its been almost 4 years since ive touched tray, conduit, ladder rack ect. And im just not sure what to do or where to go from here.

Whilst Its true I have my gold card and yes I have many years of testing and domestic installation/ house wiring experience, I still feel like im worse than an improver when it comes to the commercial side.

Im going to do my ipaf this Thursday in the hope that I more desirable for commercial/industrial jobs and I'm more than willing take a pay cut if it means i can get the exposure that I'm looking for.I'm not expecting to walk onto a data centre or major commercial project and know everything. I'm happy to start alongside experienced electricians, even if that means taking a step back to build the skills properly.

I don't know if I'm feeling imposter syndrome or if I actually am an imposter like a failure of an electrician its been a long road to get this far and it sucks that I didn't have an apprenticeship to teach me everything the way i should've.

I'm just wondering if any electricians have been in this situation or have any decent advise for me or If you were in my position, what jobs or companies would you target to build commercial installation experience?
