Questions about a career as a first-time mechanic

I’m 21 and studying motorcycle mechanics with the goal of entering the field, saving up money, and opening my own repair shop and used-bike dealership. A straightforward question: do you think studying mechanics books at home before going to a shop to ask for a first opportunity is a waste of time? Or should I just dive right in and face the challenge immediately? THX!
