Hard to navigate

Anybody else have the issue with this game where it is just very frustrating trying to navigate the map. I just began playing after having it for years, and I never had this problem with the first installment. For some reason I just am never sure where to go or how to get somewhere without constantly checking the map every few seconds. The open world especially, but even during level areas I sometimes have trouble telling which direction I am supposed to be headed.

Anybody else have this issue when they played, or is it user error? Any tips!
