>The Loneliness is a song I wrote in the fall of 2024, about a month into the writer's room for The Vampire Lestat. I had already written multiple other songs for the show, and I was getting a handle on what our Lestat wanted to say musically this season. But The Loneliness is the first time I felt like I had found something new: something that wasn't paying direct tribute to a pre-existing artist or three, and something that Lestat wanted to say about his existence that perhaps hadn't been said in this particular way before. As I've recounted in interviews, when I sent the demo to Rolin Jones, he sent me a cake with the word "Loneliness!" written in icing across the top. So it was a musical turning point for him as well. And The Loneliness v1 is the version we recorded and put out into the world.

I've been writing songs for over thirty years now. The songs I wrote in my teens aren't catalogued anywhere, and I'm grateful for that. I don't really like the songs I wrote in my 20s, either. I don't like the way my voice sounds, and I find a lot of the lyrics to be superficial examinations of deeper experiences and emotions, at best. In my 30s, I started to find a singing voice I liked more, and I learned stuff about recording and production that I still use today. But I labored over lyrics, and for the most part, I had a very hard time expressing myself in ways I found satisfyingly honest then and now.

I don't think many people get as many lives as I've gotten as a songwriter: to be given the chance to mature and improve over decades, to fail and fail and fail and fail on the way to finding something that feels real. It's strange to me that it took a fictional vampire to get me there, but I'm very proud of The Loneliness, and I feel very lucky, and grateful. What are the chances I'll listen to The Loneliness in 20 years and despise it? I hope I don't. Thank you for listening to it.
