1997 4.0 question

My first car was a ranger, a 2002 3.0 auto that I drove for 6 years, and across the continent several times. I sold it back in 2019 with 212k on it and still regret it, but the transmission was starting to go.

I've always steered away from the 4.0 because of the timing change issues, but which years did this predominantly effect?

A 1997 with a 4.0 with 135k miles described as "Runs well — idles a little high. She's old, but reliable." popped up near me for far cheaper than I'd have expected, but I'd have to move quick if I want it.

I got my 3.0 Ranger at 132k and took it to 212k, and the engine was just fine when I sold it, could I expect the same from this engine? Or is It addicted by the timing chain issues?
