This reminds me so much of the 2004 and 2013 Lakers

Discussion

Not a Warriors fan, will probably get clowned for posting here, but the Draymond opt-out broke my brain a little so here I am.

Let me give you the fun side first, because I actually mean it. Curry, LeBron, and AD on the same floor might be more entertaining than the dynasty teams were. The dynasty was beautiful but it was solved basketball. Curry broke analytics and if anything failed, KD was there to bail you out. Klay and Draymond running split action. This new team would be chaos in the best way. Curry stretching out the weak side while Lebron and AD pick and rolls on the strong side. Four first-ballot guys, three of whom are all time genuises, figuring each other out in real time. I'd buy League Pass for that alone. Nobody is arguing it wouldn't be a blast.

But that's the trap every one of these teams walks into, and Lakers fans have eaten it twice in living memory.

2004: Shaq and Kobe, already the best duo on earth, decide that's not enough and bring in Malone and Payton on discounts because two legends wanted a ring. Most stacked roster of the decade. Then Detroit — not one top-five player on the whole team — beats them 4-1 because the Pistons were a team and the Lakers were battling courtroom drama and Malone's body gave up despite being the all-time ironman before this. That's the dream outcome for this Warriors group, and it still has to go through OKC and the Spurs.

2013 is the one that should actually keep you up. Kobe and Pau add prime Dwight and Nash. Nash's leg goes in week two, the fit never clicks, Kobe blows his achilles literally dragging them to the 7-seed, swept in round one, Dwight walks for nothing. A full year of "championship roster," zero playoff wins, and the franchise set back years because the picks and money were already spent.

Think about the next 5 years of the Lakers: a bunch of tanking teams (who remembers Robert Sacre?), blown lottery picks, until Lebron and AD rescued them.

If it's 19-21 in January with three guys load-managing on back-to-backs, you cannot fix it. You just have to watch.

And for what? This team won't win, and a real possibility where someone's achilles goes in March and you're the 2013 Lakers. You'd have burned the picks, lost Butler, aged out the stars, and have nothing on the other side of it.

That's the whole thing. It's the most fun you'll have watching basketball in years, and it's your entire future on the table for a maybe.

TL;DR: yes it'll be electric, maybe more fun than the dynasty. But the dynasty was built. This is borrowed, against a future you don't have, and every team that's tried it ends up at the 2004 or 2013 Lakers grave.

Tell me where I'm wrong.
