OPUS I - Wave 1 vs Wave 2 — How to tell the difference
One of the most important distinctions in high-end FFTCG collecting is understanding the difference between Wave 1 and Wave 2 printings.
A lot of newer collectors miss this — and it matters.
Especially for cards like:
Cloud (1-182L)
Sephiroth (1-186L)
Lightning
Bartz
Terra
What is Wave 1?
Wave 1 = the original Opus I print run from 2016.
This is the first ever FFTCG product.
Think:
1st Edition Pokémon
Alpha MTG
LOB Yu-Gi-Oh
It is the true origin print.
That historical significance matters.
How to identify Wave 1
For premium/foil legends:
✔ Different foiling texture
✔ More granular sparkle pattern
✔ Punctuation errors
✔ Art errors
✔ Darker overall finish
✔ Stronger contrast
✔ Original print surface
The easiest examples:
Cloud 1-182L (Wave 1 Foil)
Sephiroth 1-186L (Wave 1 Foil)
These are the flagship comparisons.
Why does it matter?
Wave 2 is still collectible.
But Wave 1 is the first print.
Collectors always gravitate toward origins.
Over time, this gap usually widens.
Not shrinks.
Current market view
Right now:
Most casual collectors still don’t fully price in the difference.
That creates opportunity — especially in PSA 10.
My take
Wave 1 Cloud and Wave 1 Sephiroth are two of the strongest long-term FFTCG holds.
If you’re building seriously:
I’d always prioritize Wave 1.
Do you think Wave 1 will eventually be treated like true “1st edition” status? 👇
