The Wilpons never would’ve let Pete walk

Let’s be real, Steve has invested in this club in ways the Wilpons never did, but one thing they always did was retain homegrown talent.

When David Wright was a free agent they made it happen, when deGrom wanted an extension it happened. Even resigning Cespedes in 2015 and 2016, though I know he wasn’t homegrown, reflected an attitude that fan favorites meant something.

Stearns has crapped all over that. The emotional connection between players and fans is something he does not value at all.

And while the scoreboard is shiny, and the stadium is nicer, on paper the Cohen Mets aren’t all that different than the Wilpon Mets. Dysfunctional locker room and front office. And consistently missing expectations.
