PSBA and thinking of quitting to pursue freelance makeup
I’ve been working at Sephora for over 2 years and been a PSBA for almost a year. I’m thinking of quitting soon to pursue my own freelance makeup business.
Ive already done a lot of freelance work on my own for weddings, photoshoots, special events… and I’ve realized I can make so much more money doing this on my own than working at the store. I’ve been a makeup artist for over 5 years and have a lot of experience, and with my job’s discount + gratis I’ve been able to build my pro kit sufficiently now that I can do anything I need on my own.
I’m struggling with the decision to quit because I do love my coworkers and some aspects of the job, but I’ve been working retail my whole life and I’m sooo beyond sick of it. In my services I find myself wishing I could only do makeup all day and it feels useless for me to be working on the floor as a BA otherwise, it feels like I’m wasting my time. I’m a part-timer so I don’t even get decent benefits anyway, I think I would just miss the discount, gratis and my coworkers. Having a steady paycheque is also nice but I’m wondering if maybe I’m cutting myself short just by working there at this point, I can make 200$+ in a few hours doing freelance makeup, but make barely 100$ for a whole day in a regular shift at the store.
I’m wondering if anyone has been in this position as a MUA and PSBA, and if you did leave, how was that experience for you? I’m open to any advice, comments or feedback on the situation. I’m really torn and don’t rly have anyone to talk to about this that fully understands.
