New to the group and have been loving the posts and feeling the inspiration to start this restoration. We bought an 1890s four square farmhouse eight uears ago! It's nothing fancy but we are excited to begin removing the unnecessary weight burden on this old frame and make it something we'll enjoy.

What we dont have: beautiful floors under our current laminate as there is only one layer of tongue and groove on the joists. We don't have our original fireplace mantles or tile.

What we have been able to find is two mantles from an 1850s home in great shape! 12 doors to match our 6 panel doors! Getting close to all finding all of our glass knobs needed to complete the doors! And we already have old family furniture that will fit the era nicely.

After the foundation is done I move to the roof. I'll be removing the asphalt shingles and damaged plywood decking that is nailed into the original southern yellow furring strips. Has anyone had success removing the plywood and not destroying the strips? I'll be adding a metal roof and I'm torn between the black, for us finished look, or the bright silver to resemble the tin look this house almost certainly wore for decades. One feature of this roof line is the slope changes from a 6/12, from the drip edge to three feet up the roof, to a 7/12 above the three foot mark. Is there a name that would describe this framing style?

I'm also undecided on how to insulate the attic. It's one large open space as our roof is all hip and valley. We're in central North Carolina and I can't decide if blown in or batt would be best. Our ceiling joists are only 2x6 and are currently decked with plywood which ill likely be removing to clean and inspect under for any damage. I have to be able to vent it also for the ridge vent that will be installed with the new metal roof. Currently, someone built a lower ceiling at 8ft and insulated between the 8 ft popcorn ceiling and the 10 ft tongue and groove original ceiling. We're gonna do what we can to get back to those 10 ft ceilings being exposed so thats why the insulation will need to be in the attic.

We're balling on a budget here so ill be doing almost all of the work myself. All of the contractor quotes were so much more than anticipated even though we expected high pricing to begin with. $32k for electrical rewire on a full gut. $50k for foundation repair. The one thing I thought would surprise me the most was the roofing material and it's the only item that came in under my budget projection.

For flooring, I removed the siding from the front porch and carport side of an 1880s family home that I can hopefully turn into our new southern yellow pine floors with all their imperfections under a new layer of clear coat.

If you have any suggestions on attic insulation or details this firat timer may not know or may be forgetting feel free to share.

Wish our marriage luck and strength through all of this! Its gonna be a long two weeks!

Just got our first permits approved for foundation!
