PhD to Pharma Industry: Advice Needed After a Difficult PhD Journey

Seeking advice-academic

Hello everyone,

I am currently in my 4th year of a PhD in the Department of Pharmaceutical technology in Germany. To be very honest, my PhD experience has been extremely difficult, and there is a real possibility that I will finish with a thesis but without publications.

I am now at a point where I can think more clearly and I know that I do not want to continue in academia. My goal is to move into the pharmaceutical industry, start a new chapter, and put the PhD experience behind me in a healthy and constructive way.

I would really appreciate advice from people who have been through something similar or who are currently working in industry. What does the pharmaceutical industry usually look for in PhD graduates? Which skills, courses, or certifications would be useful to strengthen my CV? For example, should I focus on GMP, regulatory affairs, quality assurance, clinical research, project management, data analysis, or something else?

I am also currently working on improving my German, as I know this is important for finding a job in Germany.

My main questions are:

Do industry employers care a lot about publications, or are practical skills and motivation more important?

Is it a big disadvantage to finish a PhD in around 5 years with no publications?

What can I realistically work on now to improve my chances of getting an industry position after graduation?

Any honest advice, personal experiences, or suggestions would mean a lot to me. Thank you in advance.
