I run 1h 45min half marathon. My first HYROX class still wrecked me
Last time I tried HYROX for the first time. Just an intro class, the basic one. I thought I would be fine — I run, my half marathon is under 1:45. I was not fine.
I finished maybe 60% of the that WOD. And again, this was the beginner session.
The sled push was the first shock. My form was wrong, and I just could not move it!!! Not "it was hard" — it did not move!!!!
The wall balls were worse. Near the end I could not even catch the ball anymore, and it kept dropping back onto my own head. My heart rate sat in zone 4 almost the whole time. It honestly scared me a little.
So my running barely helped at the stations. At all. (Or maybe I am wrong and still get pontential)
After that I got curious and looked it up. There is actually a small study on this (Brandt et al. 2025 — only 11 people, so don't take it too seriously): your VO2max lines up with the running part of HYROX, but has almost no link to the stations (rho = -0.11).
That matched my day exactly. The engine is about half the race. The other half is basically a different sport.
I'm a developer, so I ended up making a small free tool about it (no signup): hyrox-time-calculator — it's mine, and it's not official HYROX, just to be clear.
The idea is simple. It guesses your run pace from a road PB, but it does NOT guess your stations from your running — you rate your own strength for that part, because (see above) running doesn't predict it. It gives a time range instead of one fake exact number, and it points out where runners usually lose time: sleds, wall balls, lunges. For me, apparently, all of them.
I'd really like to hear from people who have actually raced:
- Does the range feel close to what you ran?
- And for the strong runners here — did the stations humble you too, or did your running carry over better than mine did?
Still a little traumatized by those wall balls. Please tell me I'm not the only one.
