SHELTER ASSESSMENT SUMMARIES: Date of assessment: 29-Jun-2026

Summary:
Kroger has been observed to jump up, bite, and snap at the leash while growling when the handlers attempt to walk him. Due to the quick escalation in behavior and the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety observed, Kroger is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

PLAYGROUP SUMMARIES: DOG-DOG: N/A

ENRICHMENT NOTES:

6/29/26: Kroger is reported to not move over for his double clean.

6/28/26: Kroger is reported to not move over for his double clean. When handlers approach the kennel, Kroger is sitting at the front with a tense body. He growls at handlers when they speak to him in a soft tone. He is not receptive to chicken or cheese. When the handler attempts to coax him to the clean kennel, Kroger lip lifts and snarls at them. When the handler attempts to use a hook to remove an empty food tray Kroger snaps, bites, and shakes the hook multiple times, causing his mouth to bleed. Handlers end the interaction due to FAS.

6/27/26: Kroger is lying down in his kennel as the handler approaches. As the handler slowly brings the leash in to lasso him, Kroger jumps up and bites the leash. With every attempt, Kroger jumps up and bites the leash, briefly holding on and growling while he does so. After several attempts, the handler removes their leash and ends the interaction.

06/26/26(PM): Kroger is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches, he is offered treats and slowly accepts them while displaying a tense body toward handler, he begins to settle with more treats until a leash is presented to Kroger. He becomes tense as it comes closer and begins biting the leash before releasing after a few moments. He growls and backs up into the corner of his kennel but handler continues attempting to lasso the leash over him. Eventually they are successful but Kroger refuses to exit kennel, handler waits with Kroger for about 10 minutes before using leash pressure to coax him out. He thrashes briefly but once outside recovers and walks with handler outside to the yard for his walk. He relieves himself outside and spends most of the interaction exploring and sniffing around the yard. After a bit he is brought back inside. He returns to kennel with the help of a kuranda bed to help him reach his kennel. Once inside handler begins using a hook to slowly attempt to remove the leash from Kroger. He snaps a few times at the hook but eventually allows the leash to be removed and interaction is ended.

6/26/26: Kroger is sitting in his kennel as the handler approaches. The handler tosses both low and high value treats in front of him, but he shows no interest; a squeaker is used, but he ignores it. The handler slowly brings in the pole leash, as they attempt to leash him, kroger snaps at it multiple times. He goes to the back of his kennel; the handler tries a couple more times, but Kroger snaps at the leash again, causing his tongue to bleed. The handler removes the leash and ends the interaction.

INTAKE BEHAVIOR:

Summary: TBD

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Date of initial: 26-Jun-2026
Summary: Snapping and lunging during vaccinations. Opted to sedate

ENERGY LEVEL:
We have no history on Kroger so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

\[Spay/Neuter Waiver - Permanent\]

Your newly adopted pet has been diagnosed with brachycephalic syndrome and the staff veterinarians are issuing a PERMANENT waiver from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY. ACC does not have the facility to safely sterilize your pet with his/her current condition. However, your veterinarian will provide consultation on whether this procedure can or should be performed under their supervision. Follow up care at your regular veterinarian is recommended to ensure continued treatment and proper oversight of your pet's health.
