Using Peony Support Hoops Necessary for Big Blooms or Optional Extra?
I used to think peony support hoops were one of those things people bought just because they looked fancy. Then my peonies had a really good season and I found out the hard way why people use them.
After a decent rain, a bunch of the blooms flopped over. Some were almost touching the ground, and a couple of stems even bent enough that they never stood back up. It was kinda frustrating after waiting so long for them to bloom.
The next year I put support hoops around the plants before they got tall. Huge difference. The stems grew through the hoops naturally, and once the flowers opened everything stayed upright even after a storm.
One thing I learned is not to wait until the plant is already loaded with flowers. Trying to squeeze a hoop around a full grown peony is a pain and you'll probably snap a stem or two.
If your peonies don't get giant blooms or you live somewhere with calm weather, you might not need them every year. But if heavy rain and big flowers are common, I'd say they're totally worth having around. They aren't a must for everyone, but they definitely saved my flowers from turning into a floppy mess.
