I am helping plan a teaching/learning/school garden for a montessori preschool-elementary. The allotment plot they have has an old stump kind of in the middle that im not 100% sure what to do with. Removing it will be a hassle that I am not sure we have volunteers/resources go do.

I am wondering if I can actually turn it into a bed about "decay" instead of removing it. Ideally, we would innoculate it with mushrooms, but it is so old and in direct sun that I am really skeptical that mushrooms will succeed. We dont need nice edible mushrooms necessarily (obviously that wpuld be best though), if more aggressive but not delicious mushrooms can still demonstrate decay, that could be super cool too maybe.

Or perhaps there is a way to turn this into a bug hotel of some sort? But we need to make sure it doesnt attract wasps for safety.

Anyway, I am attaching a photo of the stump. If anyone has ideas about how to turn this into a learning tool about "decay" instead of removing it, i would really appreciate the thoughts!!!

Alternatively, if you have ideas for removing it painlessly with minimal volunteer involvement and few reaources, that is also an option.

It is in full sun, which is probably not good for mushrooms, but i could give it a cover perhaps?

Last thought: maybe a raised bed just on top of it is a way to go? Kind of a modified/opportunistic hügelkultur plan?

Turning tump into learning tool about decay?
