If you want to stop extremists then PR isn't the best option. It's the Alternate Vote
FPTP is a fundamentally bad voting system. I don't disagree with people's frustrations with it. With that being said, this obsession with proportionality has never really sat well with me - as if Parliament should be some sort of perfect mirror that neatly represents all of societies beliefs no matter how extreme or unpopular they are. If the country is 6-8 % fascist, I couldn't care less if it's more "proportional" to have 6-8% of the MPs in the country also being fascist (and condemning 6-8% of constituents, and the minorities within them to fascist representation) - I don't want them.
PR forces you to let them in. Yes, you may ultimately block them from power *if* you are in a country with a function cordon sanitaire, but those things wear down and break over time and depending on how fractal the political parties become - you may end up with fringe parties becoming kingmakers, and extracting concessions from others.
Better, in my view, is the alternative vote. Which isn't proportional, but allows you to use your vote to vote *against* others. It makes bloc voting easier - the green and labour party can feel free to compete against each other because ultimately we all know how the system works - and we can preference green or labour votes depending on who we would like, while ensuring that those we cannot stomach are not near power.
AV would stop reform in its current guise from ever returning to parliament in a position to take power. It would kill Restores ability to get any parliamentary representation whatsoever (though FPTP will do that to the latter too). Put simply, if you are a highly polarising candidate the Alternative Vote kills your chances of getting into Parliament. While under the PR system you are almost guaranteed some level of representation. Imagine a world in which we had 30 Restore MPs! This is what some of you are asking for.
I don't understand why we would want to risk that - on the (I think unsaid assumption among left wing people) that PR will ultimately cause left governments to be elected because it's what the public truly wants.
When we vote - we are not just voting *for* someone. We are voting (in my case primarily) *against* others. PR simply does not account for this, only AV does.
