Hotel Chaos: Entitled Employee Calls Police on Me
Entitled employee calls police on me because she wants to report a theft.
A few years ago, before the pandemic, my girlfriend and I traveled out of town for an event and reserved a hotel room for the week. We used one of those booking services and were booked in a disability room and charged more for it, and the sink (which had been dangling from the wall and wiggling) fell out of the wall shortly after check-in. We immediately went to the manager, who informed us that the room was supposed to be unavailable due to someone committing suicide in it a week prior and immediately moved us to another room while giving me her business card and a receipt stating that we would be receiving $100 off our stay as a result of everything that had happened. I stored everything in my wallet, and we continued with our stay.
The day before we left, I became seriously heat sick and passed out for many hours. When I awoke, the front door was wide open, and the contents of my purse were spread out everywhere. I panicked and dashed towards the door, meeting my fiancee, who was anxious. He explained that he had gone to purchase dinner for the two of us and anticipated that I would be asleep for a few more hours, so he brought some pain relievers and cold drinks to make me feel better. He was unhappy because he saw someone leaving our room and assumed I had allowed them in until I clarified that I had only just gotten up. We ended up fighting a little, mainly because he didn't believe me until I showed him my bag, which was still scattered all over the room. He felt awful and helped me clean up, and we reported what happened to the manager.
Aside from the $50 I kept in my handbag, the only item missing was the ticket from the manager, which said that we received $100 off our stay at check out. I conveyed this to the manager, who stated she had made a note in the account and would be in the office the next morning at 8, which was when we needed to leave to meet up with family when we returned home. My fiance and I were both worried and didn't sleep well that night.
When I woke up the next morning, we went down to the office at 8 a.m. to check out, and there was a young staffer waiting at the desk. The kid was certainly a freshman in college, if not in high school, and as soon as I stepped in to check out, he acted like I was a walking dung.
Kid: What do you want?
Me: I wanted to speak with (Manager's name).
Kid: she is not here right now... What do you want?
Me: (I was perplexed as to why this kid was acting the way he did, but I also wanted to get checked out.) Do you know when she'll be back?
Kid: Probably in a few hours. Now either leave or tell me what you want.
At this point, I stepped outside to tell my fiancée everything. He added that since we should have had a note on our room stating that we received $100 at check-out, I should just go ahead and check out despite the irritating kid. So I headed back inside.
Kid: What do you want?!?
Me: I would like to check out.
Kid: (rolling his eyes at me, which already irritated me) What room?
I proceeded with the checkout, but the kid was acting strangely. He inquired about the note on my account stating that I would be refunded $100, and I made the mistake of disclosing the previous day's break-in and how $50 and the manager's note were stolen after explaining that the sink fell out of the wall in the other room. The youngster instantly became defensive, claiming that, despite what the manager said, the $100 was going toward "paying for damages" and that I owed even more in cash for the damages. I don't know about you, but this struck me as weird, so I informed him I needed to speak with the manager, who had been my primary point of contact throughout the process. He got enraged and began yelling at me to either pay up and get out or go and forget about it.
I chose the second choice and sat in front of the lobby while my fiancee completed loading up the car. That's when I remembered I had the Manager's card, which included her phone number in case of an emergency. I started dialing the number when the boy walked out and demanded that I give him the card and leave. His bizarre actions perplexed me even more, as he actively attempted to pull the card from my hand while yelling in my face. When I refused to give him the card, he screamed that he was calling the cops and walked away like a friggin toddler.
My fiancee caught the tail end and informed me that we were late enough. So we got in the car and drove away, passing the manager as she entered the parking lot. I received a call within a few minutes, and I told her everything that had transpired. She thought it was strange as well, but the chat was cut short when she revealed that the police had arrived, along with a small crowd. She promised to call me back and hung up the phone.
I was astonished when she called back. As it turned out, the child never phoned the cops, but one of the other guests did. Apparently, their room, along with several others, had been broken into the day before and earlier that morning. As a result, someone's vehicle was taken, and everyone who had gathered around reported it to the police. What made matters worse was that, as the child was ranting at people in the same way he had yelled at me, a pair of keys dropped out of his pocket and were immediately recognized as the lost keys of another guest. Turns out, this boy was working with a group of buddies to steal from guests and exchange money for anything of worth. When the cops and the manager approached the youngster about it, he threw a rage, pretended to be innocent, and instructed the cops to arrest the people gathering for bothering him.
In the end, the child was apprehended, and the guests filed accusations. I was asked if I wanted to press charges as well, but I declined and simply explained that I wanted everything cleaned up with check out. I got my money back, and I received a call a few weeks later about how the youngster wanted to press charges against me and had been to the hotel demanding my contact information, but nothing occurred after that. I still couldn't believe how some youngster transformed into a total Karen when he was almost caught for thievery.
