Nikon cameras

I read the wiki and have seen a few cameras but don’t know where I fall and I figure I would ask. I have never owned a professional camera all my pictures are from my iPhone. I take a huge amount of photos of my pups and family as well as a few oh nature style when I am on vacation. I want a “starter” camera but that I can grow with for a few years. Not sure if I need to invest in a lens as well or just get a camera and see how it goes. I want to stay under 1k if possible but don’t mind going over a bit. I want it to be more hobby and not professional but would love to travel with it. Thank you for recommendations from everyone in this sub.
