Talked to an Anesthesia Consultant and completely changed my perspective on how we are obsessed with just 2 or 3 main branches and underrate others

Discussion

Had a chance to talk with an Anesthesia consultant and realised how underrated a branch it is due to less exposure that we have in our UG days...

like many of us , he too was pessimistic when he had to dwell into Anesthesia as he had a mid rank

Now he says how happy he is to have time to venture into his hobbies and have time for his kids...he has no regrets and enjoys every moment of what he does

About the salary part , he said getting atleast an extra diploma or finding your niche gets you a heft package even now in tier 1 or 2 cities

I was amazed by the variety of niches an anesthetist could venture into after his MD...He even showed me a whatsapp group which had job opportunities for DM critical care in cities like Jalandhar/ Amritsar paying 4-5 lakhs per month..

He did a diploma in pain medicine and got FRCA exams done which gave him an extra edge while being hired by big corporates..

my point is ; we consider some of the best branches with the best work life balance as good for nothing/ low paid / saturated etc just because we dont have the exposure in it during UG times..If anyone is confused about a branch , always do talk to people who are in that field for many years to get the real perspective...most of the people posting in reddit could even be UG students or graduates who do not have any first hand experience and are carried away by the trend

PS : When I asked him about the reality of saturation ; he laughed and said the demand for anesthesist is always high no matter what ; and saturation is just for people who dont find a niche in their field
