Any idea how to form this stitch?

I came across this photo and can't find the original pattern, but I would love to replicate the vine/bud column that runs vertically between the larger motifs. It looks like a twisted stitch with little bud-like knots worked every ten rounds or so, but I can't quite work out the construction. Any ideas?
