My (18M) girlfriend (20F) of 2 years 5 months guilt trips me whenever I spend time with my male friends despite being completely transparent. How can I address this without constant conflict?
My girlfriend (20F) and I (18M) have been together for 2 years and 5 months. We were together in person for the first 15 months, and we've been in a long-distance relationship ever since.
Whenever I spend even a small amount of time with my male friends (usually no more than 30 minutes), it almost always turns into an argument. Before going anywhere, I tell her where I'm going, who I'll be with, and what I'll be doing. I try to be as transparent as possible.
I also avoid talking to other girls because I know it makes her uncomfortable. I don't hide anything from her.
Here are a few recent examples:
Incident 1: I went to a friend's house to play games after telling her my plans. She replied, "Never talk to me again. Keep playing games with your friend."
Incident 2: I told her I was having lunch with a friend. She video called while I was there. I couldn't answer because I was with people, so I sent her a video showing where I was. She replied, "Forget about me. Stay with your friends."
Incident 3: My friends were participating in a robotics event and asked me to record videos for them and stay as part of the audience. I told her I'd be about an hour late. She replied, "Stay the whole night in college with your friends." When I explained they had asked for my help, she responded, "So friendship is more important than me. Nice."
This doesn't only happen with friends. She also gets upset if I spend more than five minutes talking to family members other than my parents.
On the other hand, I don't place these restrictions on her. She is free to spend time with her friends, including male friends, and with her family. I don't question her, guilt trip her, or expect constant updates from her.
I understand that long-distance relationships require reassurance, and I'm happy to provide that. However, I'm starting to feel emotionally exhausted and isolated because it feels like spending time with anyone else leads to guilt, arguments, or passive-aggressive comments. No amount of transparency seems to be enough.
I'm looking for advice on how to communicate that I need healthy boundaries and time with friends and family without making the conversation turn into another fight. I'd also appreciate advice from people who've successfully handled similar issues in a long-distance relationship.
TL;DR: My long-distance girlfriend of 2 years 5 months guilt trips me whenever I spend time with my male friends or even some family members, despite me always telling her where I am and what I'm doing. I don't place the same restrictions on her. I'm looking for advice on how to communicate healthy boundaries without escalating the conflict.
