**The Golden Boot race in 4 charts**

1. The historical recipe is pretty clear: score early, play deep, and be your team’s main outlet. Since 1998, top scorers averaged 2.8 group-stage goals, 9 of 10 reached at least the semifinal, and they scored about half of their team’s goals.

2. This year, Messi and Mbappé are the obvious two. Messi has the biggest bank coming out of the group stage with 6, while Mbappé has the balance: 4 in the group, 2 in the knockouts. Kane and Haaland are close, but need a knockout surge.

3. The scorer has to matter to his team. Messi is not just tied for the lead; he has scored 75 percent of Argentina’s goals, way above the recent Golden Boot average of 47 percent. Kane and Haaland are carrying heavy shares too. Mbappé is different: he has six goals, but France have enough scoring elsewhere that he is closer to the historical average. That is good for France, maybe less clean for the Golden Boot.

4. Then there’s finishing. Dembélé has 4 goals with less than 1 expected goal (xG), so the model is skeptical. Vinícius has 4 goals on nearly 4 xG, which makes him the cleaner chase candidate. The leaderboard says they are tied. The shot quality says they are not.
