the lore implications of respawning?

i love this game to death but while replaying it recently i started to wonder why the fans can respawn after being killed by a civilian (in their second level you can be shot by the sister) and martins story ends after being shot by a civilian? am i reading too deep into this and in need of a job or are there actual lore implications?
