Bandcamp is essentially like Kickstarter now
Anyone else feel like buying physical product via Bandcamp is basically the same risk level as Kickstarter now? I used to trust that Bandcamp customer service was adequate to intervene when an artist/label just didn't deliver (or respond to inquiries), now it's basically buyer beware. You're purchasing the *possibility* of getting that vinyl/CD/etc.
UPDATE:
Thanks for the replies. As a buyer/fan, you can run into 3 main escalating problems:
- Merch doesn’t arrive as promised
- artist/label doesn’t respond to follow up
- Bandcamp customer service doesn’t adequately follow up
Bandcamp doesn’t control (1) and (2), and often the artist/label can’t control (1) if it’s a preorder. Trust breaks down when (3) happens or becomes the norm. That’s the analogy with Kickstarter — everyone knows their customer service is a joke, but they make it clear from the point of purchase it’s all the buyer’s (“funder’s”) risk, unlike Bandcamp.
It’s not about an isolated incident — having read about layoffs and cuts at Bandcamp, takeover by private equity (private equity-backed Songtradr), and experienced a big drop off in customer service myself (after reading other posts about this), just a note of caution. Buying through PayPal seems to be the least risky option now.
