Most of what you’re reading about the UK and EU economy right now is built on a foundation of unscientific, econometric bunk.

For years, mainstream media and institutions like the IMF have pushed a singular narrative: Brexit was an unprecedented magnitude-8 macroeconomic earthquake. But if you strip away the political bias and look at the actual empirical data, a completely different reality emerges.

From 2016 through 2025, the UK economy actually grew by 13.2% cumulatively —noutperforming France (11.9%), Italy (9.2%), and Germany (8%). Structurally, the high-level “Brexit cliff” simply doesn’t exist in the data. It was a monumental political event, but a macroeconomic blip.

Why the obsession with flawed modeling? This dynamic has been intensely documented by far more experienced macroeconomic minds than my own, including veteran Eurozone analysts who originally leaned toward the UK remaining in the EU. They watched firsthand as the debate morphed into “Project Fear” — a barrage of doomsday forecasts completely detached from historical economic data.

We saw this exact same blindness during the Eurozone crisis, when the IMF used models programmed with zero elasticities to project tax revenues, essentially assuming that if you raise consumer taxes to punitive levels, people won’t change their spending habits. It’s an error that would fail a first-year economics student, yet it was used to dictate the fate of entire nations.

Today, that same blind spots are being applied to the Eurozone itself to obscure a much larger crisis: the structural collapse of the German automotive industry.

Volkswagen shedding up to 100,000 jobs isn’t a cyclical downturn; it’s the permanent migration of value-add. By launching a regulatory jihad against data harvesting and AI, the EU completely lost the autonomous and EV race to the US and China. Legacy giants are now forced to hollow out their own products, outsourcing the high-margin “brains” of their vehicles to foreign vendors.

When the industrial profits that fund the European welfare state evaporate, the material basis for the EU social contract dissolves with it.

We are asking the wrong question. It’s not “What went wrong with Britain?” It’s “What went wrong with the Eurozone?”
